Astronaut helmet prop

Last year, Designworks Modelshop were asked to create a full-scale astronaut helmet prop for use in the production of a short film.

For the design, inspiration was taken from existing helmets both actual and cinematic in order to create an original concept that was also credible.

A combination of fabrication techniques were employed to bring the helmet to life, from 3D prints and CNC machining, to textiles and electronics integration. Appropriate material selection and fine finishing were vital to create the sense of realism needed for close-up photography. The final touch of adding signs of wear to the paintwork suggests a real thing that’s travelled across the galaxy and back.
